Dental veneers are wafer thin shells of porcelain that fit over the front surfaces of your teeth. Porcelain veneers can be fabricated to any size and shape with surface characteristics that make them look natural and fit in with your surrounding teeth. Sometimes a natural colour 'composite' material is used instead of porcelain. Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth.
A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth (usually the upper ones) generally. Some of the shiny outer enamel surface of the tooth may be removed, the amount of enamel removed varies to achieved the desired result. With ultrathin veneers very little or no enamel is removed.
